CHEYENNE – For every parent who wasn’t aware their child was issued a traffic ticket until it was insurance renewal time, local law enforcement has just the program.
“In a national study, 75 percent of youth reported that they wouldn’t tell their parents if they were stopped by law enforcement,” Laramie County sheriff’s deputy Raymond Nelson said.
He said kids these days have more money than ever and are able to pay tickets without ever telling their parents.
STOPPED – Sheriffs and Police Telling Our Parents and Promoting Educated Drivers – is a voluntary program for parents to register their vehicles and information about their young drivers. Each parent is issued a decal to place in their windshield.
If the driver is issued a warning or citation, a letter will go out to the owner of the vehicle with details about the stop.
“This is a way for the parents to be made aware of a stop or citation within a matter of days after it happens,” Nelson said. “(The decal) also is a constant visual reminder to the youth that should they be stopped their parents are going to be notified.”
Cheyenne Police Department spokesman Sgt. Rob Dafoe said this is a sort of partnership between parents and local law enforcement.
“At first glance, it looks like a Big Brother type of thing, but statistics show so many young drivers tend not to tell their parents when they’re stopped,” Dafoe said
